We found the HypnoBirthing course very useful indeed. It helped us prepare on all levels, I can honestly say we were able to approach the birth with confidence and excitement. Why isn't this course on the NHS? Everyone having a baby should do it! Lucy has a real passion and enthusiasm for the subject too which really made the course even more enjoyable.

Dear Lucy,
Finally Arthur has arrived, weighing in at 7lb13oz.

The hypnobirthing was really useful, we didn't arrive at the hospital until really late into the labour, the midwife couldn't believe how calm she was and already at 7cm - she was quite shocked! She needed no gas or medication or tens machine. After arriving at the Paulton hospital it only took another 2 hours. He's really calm and chilled and has taken to breast feeding straight away!

Thanks again for everything!

HypnoBirthing was our saviour. We had had a very negative experience in a doctor led unit in London with our first born and were looking for ways to be more in control and happier with the birth of our second child. The course showed us how to turn our nerves and anxiety about our negative experience into a realisation that our bodies were designed to do this if we just let them. I went into labour with excitement and feeling very much in control. I had been relaxed and calm leading up to it as the course had taught us, amongst many other things how to be a very tight team. The midwives told Mike my husband that I was incredibly calm even during the latent phase! I remember loosing all concept of time and just concentrating on me and my body and my HypnoBirthing partner - my husband. We were in our own world! At the very end the midwives helped birth our baby. I couldn't believe it had been fourteen hours. Baby Jack was born at 2 o'clock in the afternoon looking pink and healthy. We had skin to skin contact as Mike cut the cord. It was such a beautiful moment - just how it should be.

Alexander James Pickett
Born: September 8 at 11.02am
Weight: 5lb 6oz

Helen and Luke Pickett are celebrating the birth of their first child, after they were married in July 2009. …The pair took a local HypnoBirthing course, which aims to alleviate the need for pain relief and medical intervention during birth by teaching self-hypnosis to aid relaxation.

Mr Pickett said: "we found this extremely helpful and would highly recommend it to others. We would like to thank friends and family for their good wishes, and also Lucy Hewitt, for her support and guidance in preparing for the birth of Alexander."

My hypnobirthing caesarean
Although we did not have the natural birth that we planned or wanted there is no doubt that hypnobirthing helped us in the birth of our first son.

In the weeks before our delivery the hypnobirthing relaxation techniques really helped me bond with my baby and feel a great sense of calm and optimism in the final trimester. I can honestly say that I had no fear in the run up to my birth. It also helped my husband and I share our hopes and fears, bond with each other and focus on the arrival of our new baby. We discovered that Hugo was breech a week before his due date. I spent a week trying everything possible to turn him. The consultant at Bath Hospital told us that I could deliver breech but there was a very high chance it would end in emergency C section and I could not have an active birth. So we made the decision to go for an elective C section. This was a very difficult decision and a stressful time. We still continued to do all our relaxation practice together and it definitely helped. At this time we particularly used the fear release.

Once we had decided on a C section I modified many of the hyponobirthing techniques to apply to a C section. The fear release was very helpful and I continued to do calm breathing every day.

On the day of the birth when my husband and I arrived at the hospital we again practiced fear release and calm breathing together. It helped us both stay very calm. In the operation as I was having my spinal block I practiced my slow breathing and stayed very calm. We were able to play our relaxing birth music which created a beautiful calm atmosphere. As soon as we put it on all the nurses and doctors spoke quieter and were really respectful of our need to be very calm. Once Hugo was born I asked him to be put straight down my hospital gown and I breastfed him before they had even finished sewing me up. It was truly magical.

I did not experience any horrible side effects from the spinal block or drugs and really enjoyed my C section. Bonding with Hugo immediately after my birth felt very natural and I continued to feed him whilst I was in recovery. Even though it was very surreal and not what we had planned I have no doubt that the hypnobirthing course helped both my husband and I throughout the last part of our pregnancy and our birth.

Max Adelman-Kent
Born 9/03/11 at 2.18am8lb 8oz,
Bloomsbury birthing centre, University College Hospital, London

The night before Max was born I had some surges whilst lying comfortably in bed.I thought he might be on his way.The next day, I had a routine late pregnancy appointment at the hospital, as I was 40 weeks and 3 days, when I was scanned the midwife gave me a 94% chance of going into spontaneous labour in the next 7-10 days.

That night my sister came over and we had a curry, I went to bed with a hot water bottle with mild back pain, I lay in bed for an hour, and then suddenly with a huge gush my waters broke. It was 11.20pm.I was terribly excited.I called the hospital to let them know, and they asked me to go in to be examined.I told them I would prefer to wait at home and see what happened and they said I could call in the morning to let them know how things were going.

As soon as I came off the phone the contractions started coming immediately, 3 minutes apart and lasting a minute or so.They were quite intense feelings but it wasn't painful. After 20 minutes I thought I should call the hospital and they told me to come in.We called a cab and got to the Birthing Centre at 12.30.I arrived with my eyes closed and very hot.

We were put in a side room, and I lay over a beanbag whilst the pool was run.The midwife examined me and I was 6 cm.I got into the pool and the water felt great, so warm and soothing, I lay back and said how lovely it was.The room was dimly lit, and there was just one midwife and CJ, my husband. The midwife just let me be without talking to me or asking me any questions. The affirmations was playing in the background and CJ sprayed my face with water and passed me water to sip through a straw.Within half an hour of getting into the pool, I started to feel like I wanted to push.I pushed for around 20 minutes, which felt like a great relief and exactly what my body wanted to do.The midwife said that if she didn't see the head start to crown in the next few contractions that she would need to examine me.I took this as my cue to make sure there was a head soon, so she didn't have to examine me.She asked me to feel where the head was and it was around an inch away.A few more pushes and out he came, at 2.18am, 3 hours after my waters broke.CJ caught him and he was passed through my legs and into my arms, where he cried and got very pink very quickly.

We stayed in the pool until his cord stopped pulsating.I felt incredible, so proud and so happy that I had had the labour and birth that I had wanted so much and that the end result was a beautiful, healthy baby.

HypnoBirthing removed all fear of labour and birth and made me relax and look forward to the experience. It gave me confidence in the fact that my body would do what it needed to do, and all I had to do was relax.Lucy Hewitt is a great teacher and her calm approach brought out the best in me, she empowered me with the belief that I could have the drug free, peaceful birth that I wanted.I wish that every woman could be given the opportunity to experience labour and birth as I did.

Max is the most content baby, calm and rarely cries, not even when he is having his nappy changed or getting dressed. He settles completely on his own at night. He smiles a huge amount. I adore being his mum. It's the most wonderful journey.

Amanda, Jeremy, Arthur and Araminta
"We had a baby girl today, 'Araminta', she was 8lb 2oz. I can't believe how quickly she wanted to be here. There was no time to get to the maternity ward.

I had gentle sensations at 11.30am and they got stronger at 1pm. Jeremy only just got back from being down at Glastonbury. I couldn't face getting in the car by the time he got home at 1.30. The midwives came at 2.04pm and Minty arrived at 2.06pm. I had her on our bed and HypnoBirthing helped completely. I was calm and just in control, amazing. Minty is so lovely, very relaxed and loves her milk and sleep of course. She seems really chilled, she obviously couldn't wait to be here."
